Two battalions deployed to Tarakan

National Police chief Gen. Bambang Hendarso Danuri says two battalions, one each from the police’s Mobile Brigade and the Indonesian Military (TNI), have been deployed to Tarakan, East Kalimantan, where a riot has broken out.

“We will coordinate with society leaders so that they can ensure that people there do not get too emotional with one another,” Bambang told reporters at the House of Representatives in Jakarta on Wednesday.
“We do not need any more violence,” he added.

Bambang added that the riot had broken out over a trivial event. “It was because of an act of bullying,” he said. The violence started in Tarakan on Monday after a man from the Tidung tribe was allegedly beaten by a group of men of the Bugis tribe.
